A pattern maker, also known as a modelist, is responsible for creating the pattern of a garment (the shapes of the different pieces of the garment) to materialize a style sketch or technical drawing, typically made by the designer.
Several techniques are used to move from drawing to volume:
Draping, which involves shaping the fabric on a mannequin, is the Haute Couture technique and the best for creating made-to-measure creations.Flat pattern making involves applying theoretical data on the human body and knowledge of standard measurements, making it an industrial technique.
